STEM Week 4

We had a ball today! Read below for a recap of our day.  Find science videos, Black Belt Math support material, and suggested homework. Note: It is best to view our blog on the computer. Presentations: Lots of great presentations today.  To name a couple:  We saw a wasp and a bee in a jar and I learned today that there is a bat with a 6-foot wingspan!  Your kiddos are doing great.   Science Time: This week we defied gravity by jumping and throwing balls into the air.  We observed the effects that gravity had on the balls and how an applied force could overcome the weaker force of gravity.   Next, We learned that a ball thrown parallel to the earth will curve due to gravity instead of of continuing in a straight line.  Students also were amazed that objects of different mass fell to the earth and landed at the same time when dropped together. Finally, we learned about centripetal force and experimented with a penny in a balloon.  See video for how awesome this was.

STEM Week 3

It is official!  Your kids are amazing.  We threw some pretty big ideas as them yesterday, and they took on the challenge.  Read below for recap, videos, Black Belt Math support material, and suggested homework. Note:  It is best to view our blog on the computer. Presentations:   They did another great Job Today!  I loved all the great science facts and demonstrations shared today.  Reminder:  Presentations are better received with some kind of visual.  Some things that might help:  There is a whiteboard in class and students may have access to my computer (if they would like to show something on a link. ) Science Time: This week we tackled both Newton's 2nd and 3rd Law.  We learned a little about acceleration and learned that items with more mass do not have the same velocity when acted upon by the same force.  Newton's Second law  of motion.   For an object of certain mass, the greater the force applied to the object, the greater its increase in velocity over ti

STEM Week 2

What fun we had today!  Read below for recap, videos, Black Belt Math support material, and suggested homework. Note:  It is best to view our blog on the computer. Presentations:   WOW!  We had some really great presentations today!  Your students shared facts about polar bears, kangaroos, weather, rocks, volcanoes, and much more!  They did so well standing up in front of the class and presenting in a clear loud voice. For next week , I would like to encourage students to also bring a visual along with their presentation.  For example:  If the student is presenting on bees, then perhaps they will also bring images of bees, hives, flowers, etc.. They could even bring honey to taste.  It really helps to capture the audiences' attention and add appeal directly to the imagination. Science Time: We continued our exploration into Newton's First Law.  Last week we explored objects at rest, and this week we explored objects in motion.  We found out how important it was to wear

Reminders

What to bring to class on the 11th:  Students are encouraged each week to come prepared for class with the following: A 3 ringed binder. A short science presentation.   Black Belt Math Status. (signed log sheet)  Optional homework for 4th - 6th (great for k-3 also):   Choose from one source (or more if you like) below: Online:  Scholastic:   http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/forces-and-motion/inertia.htm Online: CK-12   https://www.ck12.org/physics/Newtons-First-Law/ Text: Rainbow Science (If you own the book) Read Chapter One  https://beginningspublishing.com/RainbowSamples/1-3.pdf    Note:  I am sorry to say that the used price for this book has gone way up since the beginning of the summer.  It is not at all necessary to purchase this text book.
