STEM Week 7/8

Presentations:
Here is some of the delight driven presentations we heard about today: rocks, hurricanes, chemical reactions, cotton, and compost.

Presentation Reminders:
  • Provide an image or a hands-on example.
  • Highlight key-words, or use bullet points on an index card.
  • Practice presenting before you come
  • Project your voice, so that everyone can hear you.  (I usually say to bounce your voice off the back wall.)

Science Time:

This week we introduced another natural force.  Magnetism.  We learned that magnetism is an invisible force or field.  This week we focused the magnetic field and on magnets.

Students learned that a magnet is a special material whose molecules are arranged so that their electrons spin in the same direction.  This molecular structure creates a magnetic force that flows from one side (or pole) to the other.

In class, we placed magnets under a piece of paper and sprinkled iron filings on top of the paper.  This allowed us to see the magnetic field created by the magnet.

Week 8:  We reviewed information about magnetic fields and how they interact with each other.  We also talk about earth's magnetic field.

3rd-6th grade created electromagnets.

Math Time:

Keep up the good work mastering facts!

We played a great game today called zap it math. This is a fun easy way to help kids memorize their facts.  Here is a link to the game:  https://logicroots.com/MathBlog/zap-it-math-game/

My apologies with the belts.   The parachute cord is not working ( It is too wide for some of the pony beads.)  I will try and figure out a system this week and reissue.

Please note: It is okay to stay on a level as long as it is necessary to master the material. Perhaps some students it will need to take several weeks to master +1 and +2 addition before for moving on to +3 and +4. That is perfectly fine and as it should be. The belts are a helpful way to reward hard work and give incentive to mastery at each and every level.

You will find flashcards, skip counting videos, and drill sheets to aid your child in the mastery of the four basic operations. http://stonetablestemclub.blogspot.com/p/black-belt-math.html (Also linked at the top of this blog.)

PARTY TIME:  Reminder next week will be our fall party.  We will be having pizza for lunch and you are welcome to bring a side item to share.  Mrs.  Kittle will be heading up game time and could use any help/resources you can provide.

What to bring to class on October 23th:

Students are encouraged each week to come prepared for class with the following:
3 ringed binder
A short science presentation. (No more than 2 minutes)
Black Belt Math Status. (signed log sheet)

Optional homework:

 Scholastic Slideshow:

Text and Videos: CK-12

I just realized that the link wasn't correct for potential and kinetic energy.  I went back and corrected it for week 5, and also posted it here.

Week 12

We finished up our unit on simple machines this week! The younger class was unable to watch this video on incline planes, so if you have a chance please take a look. We had a wonderful time making marble runs this week.  We have some amazing engineers in our classes.  Here is a video showing how to make a marble run if you would like to make your own. https://youtu.be/IN0Wn0XgPXQ Optional Homework: Build a Rube Goldberg's Machine using simple machines.   Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist that is known for drawing complicated machines to do simple tasks.  Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to design a machine using simple machines that will result in poping a balloon.  See the video below for an example. Take a video of the machine or bring it in January for us to see first hand.  Have fun inventing!
